Petrified Wood in Hood County, TX

In Hood County, some of the lower areas of the land lie in the Paluxy Sand Formation. As the name infers, the soil is mostly an orange colored sand, and occasionally, fossils of the conifers that once covered the land are found as fossilized wood, or more commonly know as petrified wood.  The fossils are not wood at all, but are remnants of the original wood that has been replaced by minerals to form a rock replica we find today.  See samples below of petrified wood from Hood Co., TX.
